Lefties Dominate Baseball Early in the Season

You usually suck whenever you start to do something you have not done in a while. It is mostly true when you were not very good to begin with. For example, if you were an expert swimmer in college, chances are you might still be a decent swimmer 20 years later even if you never done it for a while. But let's say you were an average swimmer, what are the chances that you won't be very good at it?

I use that analogy to compare swimming (or whatever else you can think of) to hitting left handed pitching. Baseball teams are not very good against lefties and it becomes the most evident early in the season. This is because teams are just starting to get into the groove of a regular baseball season. They are going through the motions of batting practices, playing games, travelling. Things are starting fresh. So does hitting against lefties.

So let's compare the numbers folks. Based on past statistics, teams have won 48.0% of their games against lefties in the first half of the season and 49.2% in the second half of the season. That is a considerable margin folks. 1.2% is worth about 2.5 points on the spread. So for the average $100 bettor, you gain $2.50 more by betting against these in the first half of the season as oppossed to the second half of the season. These teams are even worse if you concentrate on the first 30 games of the season where they are another 2 points worse against the money line.

In order to make this angle pop. Consider betting against these teams when they fall into one of the following situations. Intersections of 2+ of the following angles make bring into question other factors not described in this article and are therefore not guaranteed to work.

  • Off a loss. Momentum means a lot.
  • In game 3 of a series or game 4 of a series. Near the end of a series, an underdog type of team is likely to let up their intensity.
  • At home. They may not be trying as hard as they should. Even though they have home field advantage chances are that they are letting up for the game.
  • Against a team that is coming off scoring double digit runs. We are predicting our team to have trouble scoring against lefties but if the opponent is showing signs of scoring pretty well, you are in for trouble.
